How to Use a Six-Step Hair-Care Routine in the Right Order

Why Order Matters in a Hair-Care Routine

Applying products in the wrong sequence can block active ingredients from reaching the hair shaft, weigh strands down, or dilute treatments before they have a chance to work. Follow the steps below and you'll get the most out of every product in your regimen.

The Six Steps — In Order

Step 1 — Scalp Treatment (Pre-Shampoo)

Start at the root. Apply a scalp treatment or scalp serum directly to dry or damp hair before you shampoo. This allows active ingredients to work on the scalp without the barrier of product buildup. Massage gently for 2–5 minutes, then proceed to shampoo.

Step 2 — Shampoo (Cleanse)

Wet hair thoroughly, then work your shampoo from roots to mid-lengths. Shampoo is designed to lift buildup and oil — avoid scrubbing the ends, which are the oldest and most fragile part of the strand. Rinse completely.

Step 3 — Hair Mask (Deep Treatment)

After rinsing shampoo, squeeze out excess water and apply a hair mask from mid-lengths to ends. Masks are richer and more concentrated than conditioners, so they need clean hair to penetrate properly. Leave on for the time specified on the packaging (typically 5–20 minutes), then rinse thoroughly.

Step 4 — Conditioner (Moisture Seal)

Follow the mask with a conditioner to seal the cuticle and lock in the treatment you just applied. Apply from mid-lengths to ends, leave for 1–3 minutes, and rinse with cool water to help close the cuticle.

Step 5 — Leave-In Conditioner or Cream (Detangle & Protect)

On towel-dried hair, apply a leave-in conditioner or styling cream. This creates a protective layer, helps with detangling, and provides a base for any styling products. Work through from ends to roots.

Step 6 — Hair Oil (Finish & Seal)

Oil is always last. Applying it after leave-in products seals in moisture and adds shine without blocking your treatments. Use 1–3 drops (more for thick or coarse hair), warm between palms, and smooth over the surface of the hair. Avoid applying directly to the scalp if your hair tends to get oily at the roots.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

  • You don't have to do all six steps every wash day. Masks, for example, are typically used 1–2 times per week rather than at every wash.
  • Results depend on hair type, porosity, and consistency of use — there's no universal timeline.
  • If you have a specific scalp condition or hair loss concern, consult a licensed dermatologist or trichologist for personalized guidance.
